135 miles long and only 50 miles at its widest point, Lebanon is steeped in history and has a blend of tradtional Arabic and more recent Western cultures. Its dominating mountains have, to a great extent, shaped its history, giving refuge to various religious groups for hundreds of years during times when the land formed part of the Roman, then Arab and then Ottoman Empires. The narrow, fertile coastal belt enjoys a warm, subtropical climate which extends into the Bekaa Valley, but the temperature cools rapidly as the land rises to the mountain belt.
